20 Creative Dutch Braid Tutorials You Need To Try This Summer
A few months ago, Kim Kardashian-West, Kylie Jenner, and Khloe Kardashian all started posting Instagram selfies with their hair in braided pigtails… and everyone freaked out. The braids were quickly duplicated by supermodels like Kendall Jenner, Hailee Baldwin, and Gigi Hadid, and were then coined “boxer braids” by… well, actually, I don’t know who started calling them that. They’ve since been spotted on almost every *trendy* young woman out there, became a hair trend sensation, and taken over Tumblr. On top of that, they’ve been mixed up in controversy, especially when the various Kardashian/Jenners started wearing more than two of the braids, making them, essentially, cornrows. Boxer braids have become, in many people’s eyes, just another inappropriate way the Kardashian klan appropriates black culture.
Hold on a second. As a white woman, I don’t feel comfortable speaking about the cultural appropriation issue, but as for everything else? I’m confused. The original style is seen on Kim K – two braided ponytails AKA pigtails – is something I’ve seen and worn forever. They’re just two Dutch braids! Or, in some cases, French braids. I’ve been doing this to my hair since I was a little kid. Dutch braids, which are a version of French braids where you braid hair over instead of under, happen to keep your hair off your face/neck very well. They’ve been my go-to for skiing hairstyles since high school because they’re comfortable under a helmet, don’t make me look bald, and keep my hair in place.
That is to say, these are just French braids. Or, to be specific, Dutch braids. Why are people acting like they’re a new thing? Why are we pretending Kim Kardashian-West invented this hairstyle? This is just… weird.
That said, let’s talk about how great Dutch braids are! Like I said, they’re a perfect style if you want your hair to look cute but also be low maintenance. They’re also really pretty to look at, and you can do so much more with them than just put them into pigtails. And although they seem complicated, they really aren’t – if you can French braid, you can Dutch braid. See?
All of that makes the Dutch braid the perfect style to try this summer. They’re great for the pool, the beach, or just a really hot day. They’re even great for the gym! Here are 20 creative Dutch braid tutorials you need to try ASAP that are way cooler than the ones Kylie is sporting on Insta. Sorry, Ky.
